Each dimension table contains a primary key, often system-generated to uniquely identify each dimension. This key links to the associated fact tables, which contain more information.

- The dimensions can be stacked over time, forming a three-dimensional cube-like structure. The cube can be sliced into time periods, or according to a dimension.
- A dimensional design does not have to use an RDBMS structure or enforce normalization unless it is useful to do so.
- Data retrieval is very fast and efficient.
- This type of data warehouse is faster to build and quicker to understand and use. However, it is also inefficient and subject to duplication and data inconsistency. It is also difficult to modify.
A [normalized approach uses a relational database structure including columns and rows. It often stores data in an RDBMS.
- Data is said to be normalized when it is organized into tables with relationships between the tables. The normalization process maps the original source data into tables, rows, and columns.
